ELECTION DAY

September 9 (Partisan Primary – City of Charlotte), October 7 or November 4, 2025, depending on where you live. The September and/or October primaries narrow the number of candidates who will appear on November’s ballot. Local races touch our everyday lives and should be a top priority for all voters. Here are the positions that may be be on your ballot if you live in certain cities or towns in these counties:

MAYOR: Mecklenburg, Gaston, Union, Cabarrus
CITY / TOWN / VILLAGE COUNCIL: Mecklenburg, Gaston, Union, Cabarrus
BOARD OF EDUCATION: Mecklenburg
TOWN BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS: Mecklenburg, Gaston, Cabarrus
ALDERMAN: Gaston, Union

BUT… WHAT DO ALL OF THESE POSITIONS DO?

MAYOR & CITY/TOWN/VILLAGE COUNCIL 

Supervise general administration of day-to-day city and town operations, including police & fire departments, arts & parks, local taxes, economic development, water & sewer management, and zoning.

LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS 

School boards decide where kids go to school, classroom sizes, and even what textbooks are used.

TOWN COMMISSIONERS
The town Board of Commissioners may hold purse strings for your community, determining everything from local funding for your elections to setting your property taxes and approving a town budget. They set policies through ordinances and organize the town government.
