On January 13th in a bipartisan vote, the U.S. House impeached Donald Trump for an unprecedented second time after he incited a mob to stop Congress’s confirmation of the 2020 presidential election result. Even though Joe Biden has replaced Trump as president, the impeachment process will continue with a trial in the U.S. Senate, where many Senators, including North Carolina’s own Sens. Richard Burr and Thom Tillis, remain undecided about whether to convict the president of this attack on our country, our democracy, and our people, and remove him from holding future office.
Trump may have left Washington, D.C., but his threat to our democracy continues in any position he holds.
A Senate conviction and accompanying vote to also disqualify Trump from holding future office would mean a president who has consistently undermined our democracy, normalized white supremacy, and betrayed Black and Brown Americans would be barred from holding any future office. Swift bipartisan action by the Senate also sends a strong message to leaders from any party that those who value violence over votes and power over the will of the people will not prevail.
Your actions now will move us one step closer to a government that works for all of us.
