A historic piece of legislation passed a major hurdle in the U.S. House of Representatives this month.
The bill, H.R.1, dubbed the “For the People Act of 2019,” has been called “the most significant democracy reform bill in a generation.”
The proposal addresses voter access, election integrity, election security, political spending, and ethics for all three branches of government. Among other things, it would expand voter registration and voting access, make Election Day a federal holiday, and limit purging eligible voters from voter rolls. The bill also provides for states to establish independent, nonpartisan redistricting commissions and sets forth important provisions to promote election security.
