Democracy NC Responds to Surprise Special Session Designed to “Keep Voters in the Dark”

DURHAM – North Carolina lawmakers announced plans today to host a surprise special session to take control away from a commission tasked with providing unbiased summaries to describe six constitutional amendments on the ballot this fall.

Tomas Lopez, Executive Director of Democracy North Carolina, released the following statement in response, calling the session another effort to “to keep voters in the dark.”

“Voters need to understand what they’re voting on. This special session undermines that. North Carolinians are entitled to an unbiased look at the six amendments they’ll be voting on this fall — free from partisanship. This session is the latest in a long line of brazen power grabs designed to keep voters in the dark. North Carolina deserves better.”

Democracy North Carolina has opposed four of the six amendments, which include a strict photo ID requirement to vote, changes to the judicial vacancy selection process, and challenges to long-standing executive appointment powers.

Democracy North Carolina is a statewide nonpartisan organization that uses research, organizing, and advocacy to increase civic participation, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and remove systemic barriers to voting and serving in elected office.
