DURHAM – During a special session held today in Raleigh, North Carolina lawmakers approved two election-related bills eliminating options for plain-language summaries of constitutional amendments on the ballot this fall and stripping certain judicial candidates of party affiliation.
Tomas Lopez, Executive Director of Democracy North Carolina, released the following statement in response, calling the session another “sham process” to deceive voters for partisan gain.
“Today’s surprise special session was an unvarnished attempt to affect the outcomes of our elections by switching up the rules less than 90 days before citizens begin casting ballots. This sham process leaves voters without plain-language explanations of vague constitutional amendments on their ballots this fall, and the once-again altered rules on party affiliation appear clearly designed to advantage a preferred judicial candidate.
