Democracy NC Responds to Legislative Calls to Rush Vote Counts, Asks Lawmakers to Let Election Officials Do Their Jobs

MORRISVILLE, N.C. (11/6/2020) — Voting rights group Democracy North Carolina responded to a letter from N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore today encouraging a legislative elections committee leaders to “utilize all available tools,” including constitutional and statutory subpoena power “to compel the Board to do its job as soon as possible.”

In a statement, Tomas Lopez, Democracy North Carolina Executive Director called on lawmakers to let election officials do their jobs.

“A healthy democracy is one in which every eligible voter has their voice heard and their vote counted. That means we count all eligible votes and certify elections as provided by law, not the perceived expediency of any given moment. Voters did their jobs in this election, from now until the Day of Canvass — when North Carolina always certifies its elections — we should all let election officials do theirs.”

Election officials have said final vote counts would come next week ahead of the state’s traditional Day of Canvass, where final absentee and provisional votes are typically counted by all 100 counties and each county’s election results are certified. Democracy North Carolina will be deploying volunteers to the majority of North Carolina counties to observe next week’s meetings. For more information on the Day of Canvass, visit demnc.co/canvass.
