Democracy North Carolina, a 501(c)3 nonpartisan organization, is seeking individuals from across the state to join our Board of Directors.

Potential new board members can submit an interest form and resume/CV (if you have one) and may progress through our process depending on how their skill set and qualifications match and meet the current needs of the board. The full application process includes an interview with our board chair and staff leadership.

Board members serve a three-year term, which may be renewed for one additional three-year term. New board members will participate in a board member orientation. These positions are voluntary and, therefore, unpaid.

The Candidates We’re Looking For

Every Board of Directors seeks members who will uphold its organization’s mission and values and will work to govern and direct the organization in a way that provides excellent stewardship and the success of its goals. Click here for a detailed description of board responsibilities.

Together with the Executive Director, the Board is responsible for governing Democracy North Carolina through shared leadership. The Board is the guardian of the mission and resources, ensuring effective and fiscally sound programs and operations, and providing strategic advice and direction to the staff and volunteers of the organization.

  • We seek a Diversity of candidates in gender, race, ethnicity, North Carolina region, age, sexual identity, education, and ability.
  • We seek a Diversity of work and life skills including financial, human resources, fundraising, nonprofit, legal, organizational behavior, movement organizing, and voting rights.

Given the current makeup of our board, at this time we are particularly interested in candidates who are:

  • From Eastern NC
  • From rural areas
  • Women
  • Latine and/or BIPOC
  • LGBTQIA+

And those candidates with experience in:

  • Community organizing
  • Fundraising
  • Human Resources
  • Voting Rights

All interest forms will be reviewed and considered. Those who do not move forward in the application process may be considered for subsequent terms if they remain interested.
