Statement on Court of Appeals ruling in NC State Supreme Court Race

Statement from Katelin Kaiser, Policy Director with Democracy NC

MORRISVILLE (April 4, 2025) – It is extremely disappointing and dangerous that the Court of Appeals has ruled against the people of North Carolina, giving power to a baseless, manipulative, and deceptive legal argument. The over 65,000 voters Griffin is trying to disenfranchise did everything that was required of them to vote in the 2024 General Election. For the Court to adopt this unprecedented request, without any evidence showing any of these voters were ineligible to cast a ballot, is a bad day for our democracy, which depends on an independent judiciary to interpret laws impartially and ensure elections reflect the will of voters. Judicial decisions affecting voting rights must be grounded in clear legal reasoning and constitutional principles, not partisan advantage. How can the people of North Carolina trust our court system to follow the law, when it is in lockstep with an agenda to undermine the legitimate results of an election for their political gain and entrenchment?

This cannot be how our democracy works, and Democracy NC will continue to work with other state partners to ensure the voters impacted do not have their fundamental right to vote stolen from them. Voters who are concerned about the status of their vote can text the North Carolina voter assistance hotline 888-OUR-VOTE (888-687-8683).
